Touching surfaces and air, inhaling particles, or swallowing dust are among the ways TSNA can enter the body, where it can remain for days after contact. Sleeping on chimney bed sheets, for example, is one method of exposure to TSNA.

Destaillats said researchers have used information collected over the past decade “to estimate the daily doses that people may be exposed to when living in homes contaminated with third-party smoke.”

“We provide further evidence of the genotoxicity of nNA by evaluating its effect on cultured human lung cells,” said study co-author Bo Hang. “Contact with NNA resulted in DNA damage, including double breaks, which is the most harmful consequence of genotoxicity.”

Testing on mice, rats, hamsters and mink, the researchers noted that NNK caused cancer, including liver, lung and pancreatic cancer, suggesting that its presence may have toxic effects in humans. Even after not being around tobacco smoke or contaminated surfaces, researchers discovered that toxins can remain in the blood for days.

In fact, under “typical indoor conditions,” the scientists found that doses of NNK exceeded health guidelines found at the California Environmental Health Risk Assessment Office. According to Proposition 65, NNK levels have been found to be higher than “nonsignificant risk levels,” increasing the risk of cancer.

“These findings demonstrate the potential health effects of third-hand smoke, which contains not only TSNAs but also hundreds of other chemicals, some of which are also known carcinogens,” said co-author Neil Benowitz, a UCSF professor who leads the consortium. “The next steps of this research will explore in more detail the mechanisms of adverse health effects associated with tobacco and cannabis residues, effective treatment strategies, and the translation of scientific findings into tobacco control practice.”
