Really, wireless earbuds are usually better used for music, but they can also take phone calls more conveniently. Usually, though, that comes with a drop in audio quality. In a new microphone test, the Pixel Buds Pro compete against the king of the hill, AirPods Pro, alongside Samsung’s new Galaxy Buds 2 Pro — and Google tolerates it well.
In our review of Pixel Buds ProWe found the microphone quality to be relatively strong both indoors and outdoors. But lately, the edge It was able to put the Pixel Buds Pro to a real torture test for microphone quality and compare it to some of the other flagship options.
Microphone test puts Samsung’s new Pixel Buds Pro, AirPods Pro, Sony LinkBuds S and Galaxy Buds 2 Pro through a variety of challenging situations surrounding a New York City ferry. The stages of testing were as follows:
- Waiting for the ferry, with sounds of Manhattan, boat engines and a helicopter platform nearby (Pixel Buds Pro didn’t participate in this test due to time)
- Inside a ferry, sitting near the engines

In the first test, the difference between the AirPods Pro and LinkBuds was minimal, but the Galaxy Buds 2 Pro sound quite different, and not in a particularly positive way. In the second test, Samsung’s option deteriorates further in sound quality as it struggles to compensate. AirPods and LinkBuds win easily back here, but the Pixel Buds Pro held up fairly well, sounding better than the Galaxy Buds overall, but still struggling to balance out sound quality.
The Pixel Buds Pro seemed to shine out of the gate, compared to the AirPods Pro, they obviously retained sound better with much less distortion and separation compared to the Apple ones.
